7 games like life is strange you must play
Life is Strange was a breath of fresh air when it hit the consoles. A graphical adventure game, it has turned its back on huge sprawling open worlds for episodic installments. It made the developers realize that the story is as important as anything else to gamers.
The best story-driven adventure games come in a range of old and new titles. Each of the games below may have different themes, but they each have engaging storylines to keep you hooked. Read on as we showcase our seven best games like Life is Strange.
What remains of Edith Finch
What Remains of Edith Finch has been one of my favorite games from the last ten years. He is often overlooked to be a artistic and hipster indie game. However, many of her peers rarely do half as well with their narrative as Edith Finch.
With just one rudder control and an enter button, you begin a journey around your inherited family home. The premise is that a curse has befallen your family. This is where the game might fall into some tired haunted house clichés and tropes, but it never does.
Instead, it takes a courageous dive into mental health issues and genealogy. Although he remains sad throughout, he mixes it up with playful interludes to keep the game balanced. The title is short and you can play it all in the time it would take to watch a movie.
If you want a game that kills a few hours but leaves you with a feeling of thrill and emotion, you need this game. A truly must-have title.
The last of us
Unless you’ve been living in a club for a few years, you’ll have heard of the Last of Us. However, if you haven’t played it already, you’re missing out on a treat. You will be hard pressed to find a game that touches you as much as this one.
The game is survival horror, although that alone does not do it justice. While the zombie tale has a proven track record, the game isn’t about shock and gore. Horror is secondary to the development of the father-daughter relationship between the main characters.
A virus known as Cordyceps has swept across the United States, turning people into flesh-eating undead. You play as the two main characters, as they cross the United States in the span of a year. The goal is to get Ellie, who is the only person known to be immune to the virus, in a place where it can be studied for a cure. The twist at the end leaves a real question mark hanging over the game.
Unfortunately, tracking does not address this issue as well as it should. That’s why the game pushes his younger brother to claim his place on the list.
Beyond two souls
Quantum dream studios could be the masters of storytelling in games. This title, Beyond Two Souls, even debuted in Tribeca Film Festival although it is not a movie. It’s a perfect blend of interaction and adventure.
You are Jodie, a young woman with strange psychic powers. Linked to her is Aiden, a dark, floating entity. You play as the two characters as they grow, develop powers, and learn to live together.
The in-game controls take some getting used to. You use the directional control to move towards the objects marked with white dots. Once there, you have several choices regarding what you want to do with them.
It’s not that the controls are complicated, but they are quite alien compared to many other games. However, this shouldn’t put you off in any way. After an hour, it will become second nature.
The game has a star cast including Elliot Page and Willem Dafoe. Every choice you make will impact the storyline, and these are usually moral dilemmas. As such, there are different endings for the game.
Heavy Rain is another great adventure based on the story of Quantic Dream. In fact, the two games have been combined in The Heavy Rain & Beyond: Two Souls Collection. Where the other game had received commercial criticism, Heavy Rain was a smash hit.
The game’s cowardly protagonist is Ethan Mars, who has three days to save his son from the sadistic origami killer. As Ethan makes several tries to reveal his son’s whereabouts, other people hunt down the murderer as well. This leads to a twisted plot in which you take on four quite different characters.
Again, the choice you make has an impact on the outcome of the game. Depending on which character you reach the end of the game with, the outcome is determined. Adapted from a 2000 page script by the creator David Cage, the attention to detail is amazing.
The disappearance of Ethan Carter
Ethan Carter’s opening bet is a warning that tells you he won’t hold your hand. It’s true, so much so that you can face abject frustration when playing. The heights of this game are worth it as you explore a beautiful open world.
You play as Paul Prospero, a detective with strange occult powers. After receiving a fan letter from a young boy named Ethan Carter, he travels to the boy’s hometown. He finds the Carter family murdered and must try to piece together their disappearance.
The crux of the game is to use Paul’s powers to see what happened in the past. You can create psychic visions of events, collecting clues from items found in the game. Time is tangible in the game, and you even have to set up cutscenes to divulge the correct information.
Drawing inspiration from classic ’70s horror and Gothic literature, the tale is spooky but without relying on clichés. Its excellent twist at the end leaves you begging for more and heartbroken.
Like Edith Finch, the game is quite short. It ends well leaving no possibility of a follow up, so enjoy it while you can.
The wolf among us
Almost any Telltale Games title could have been on this list. Their Batman titles are particularly awesome. Combining interactive storytelling with stunning comic book illustrations, they’re almost more of a graphic novel than a game.
The Wolf Among Us is based on the Fables Comic Series. You play as Bigby Wolf, known collectively as the Big Bad Wolf of fairy tales. It consists of five chapters, each related to the larger narrative.
As Bigby you must investigate a murder in Fable Town. This secret community of fairy tale characters exists in ’80s New York. It’s a great concept for anyone who hasn’t read the comics yet.
The game is casual in its application, using interaction with objects to unravel the mystery. Some scenes that require more action increase the pressure with fast-paced events. It combines into a fun and exciting story that’s easy to play.
One of the great things about the game is the depth of character. All the big names in fairy tales will appear at some point in much more squeaky forms. The Little Mermaid is a prostitute for example, and Beauty and the Beast are a middle-aged couple with marriage difficulties.
While it might not have the luster and sparkle of most of the other games on the list, it’s an imaginative title with a great storyline. If you are a fan of graphic novels then this is for you.
Detroit becomes human
Detroit: Becoming Human is the third and last title Quantic Dreams on the list. This is another game from famous producer David Cage, and like his other games, it spared no detail. This time, the supernatural themes have disappeared in favor of a futuristic setting.
The whole game has a discomfort, under your skin tension about it. This is because the subject is not a distant and far-fetched plot. I have a feeling it could happen next year.
In the game, machines have become as smart as humans. However, they still serve humans in different roles. As they move away from their programming, they become more human, bonding to form an alliance.
You play three of these androids and the choices you make will impact the outcome. One uses his sensitivity to lead a revolution and the other to take care of a young girl. The third is a police investigator who must make tough decisions about his allegiances.
The game has a stellar cast. Jesse Williams, Clancy Brown and Lance Henriksen all add a realism that blurs the line between man and machine. Like many great games, it raises uncomfortable questions about what it means to be human.
