What’s in this Apple Cider Hot Toddy Recipe

This easy apple hot toddy recipe features just six ingredients and comes together in 5 minutes (or less). It’s just like a classic hot toddy, but with autumnal apple cider!

  • Apple Cider: Store-bought apple cider works just fine! If you do want to make your own, try my easy Crockpot apple cider recipe.
  • Lemon: Freshly squeezed lemon juice adds the very best flavor. Try to avoid using bottled juice if possible.
  • Spices: You’ll need one cinnamon stick and one star anise for this co*cktail recipe. They both add such a wonderful aromatic quality!
  • Whiskey: This recipe contains a double shot of whiskey. You can half it if you prefer a less strong drink.

PRO TIP: Take the co*cktail off of the heat when you add in the whiskey. If the drink continues to heat, the alcohol will evaporate.

What’s the best whiskey to use in a hot toddy?

I love to make this drink with a whiskey bourbon like Jack Daniels. I find the flavor works so well with the apple cider and spices. You could make this with a Scotch or Irish whiskey if you prefer, or try Fireball for an extra kick of cinnamon flavor.

Can I make it ahead of time?

You can keep the hot toddy warm on the stovetop for a couple of hours if you want to enjoy more than one drink, just don’t let it boil. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for a few days and easily reheated.

How do you garnish it?

You can serve this co*cktail without any garnishes, but I like to add a cinnamon stick and slice of apple and lemon to each glass to make it feel extra special and to enhance the flavors.

Can you make this drink without honey?

Honey helps to balance out the flavor of the whiskey and lemon. If you don’t have honey, maple syrup is a great substitution. You can also stir in some brown sugar instead until it dissolves.

How to Store/Reheat

Once cooled, transfer your apple cider hot toddy to an airtight container. Keep it stored in the fridge for 2-3 days. Reheat in the Crockpot or right back on the stove until warmed through. Don’t let it come to a boil when reheating.

Serving Suggestions

I love serving these fall hot toddys after Thanksgiving dinner as a dessert co*cktail!

FAQs

How does a hot Tottie work? ›

The ingredients in a hot toddy have been shown to have cough-suppressing properties. Alcohol isn't needed in the recipe to experience these benefits. Consuming warm water, lemon, and honey is the key to symptom relief. Additional items can be added to taste, such as tea, clove, and ginger.

Can you mix whiskey with apple cider? ›

Simple to make and super soul-warming, apple cider whiskey is one of the best whiskey co*cktails to enjoy with family and friends during the fall and holiday season, especially around the fire on a brisk day.

What is apple cider vs apple juice? ›

Southern Living says that apple cider also uses pressed apples, but unlike apple juice, the pressed apple is unfiltered and unpasteurized. This is the reason consumers may see residue at the bottom of the drink (the best solution is to shake the bottled cider to mix).

Who drinks hot toddys? ›

The British declared the drink as their own, which is why it's a staple in pubs throughout England. During the cold and damp winters, it became common for consumers to pour hot water into their scotch or whiskey. With time, spices were thrown into the mix resulting in the classic we know today.

What is the ingredients of a hot toddy? ›

To make a hot toddy, you'll need bourbon (which is a type of whiskey), honey, lemons, cinnamon sticks, star anise pods, and whole cloves. Simply combine the bourbon, lemon juice, and honey in a mug and add boiling water (use more or less water depending on how strong you'd like your hot toddy to be).

Do hot toddy really work? ›

Both experts concluded that a hot toddy is a soothing drink that can help temper some cold symptoms, but it doesn't have any more healing powers than a bowl of soup or a steaming cup of tea. “It'll make you feel better because it's comforting and it will help replace some fluids, but not much else,” Kacew says.

What alcohol is good with apple cider? ›

Apple cider is apple juice that has not been filtered and still contains all the apple pieces, pulp, and sediment. It is the raw, purer version of apple juice. What type of alcohol do you put in apple cider? ›

We like to add the liquor to our hot toddies last. The reason is if we added it first, the boiling water would start to evaporate away some of the alcohol. We have no idea how much, but we paid for full-strength whiskey and we're not prepared to lose any of it to the atmosphere!

Can hot toddies get you drunk? ›

The hot toddy is not one of those drinks that you down simply to get drunk. It is more of an experience and a way to relax, so its alcohol content may be irrelevant for the most part. However, for the curious drinker, you can expect it to weigh in around 6 percent ABV (12 proof).
