Best Race for Each Profession in Guild Wars 2
The differences between races in Guild Wars 2 are mostly cosmetic, giving you access to different early game scenarios and different appearances for your armor, but each race has a set of dedicated abilities that can be used in PvE. These abilities are disabled in PvP and mostly unused late in the game, but if you’re looking for ways to boost your profession’s strengths early in the game, here are our recommendations.
Elementalists focus on using powerful AoE abilities to destroy mobs of enemies. The racial skills of the Asura lend themselves naturally to this style of play. Pain Inverter can save you from a tough spot by confusing nearby enemies, Radiation Field gives you an extra area of effect to boost your combos, and Technobabble can stun a powerful enemy while you charge a spell.
Engineers use their toolbox to control the battlefield and have unique abilities for each race. Your choice of breed matters more to engineers than to any other profession. While each race is viable and offers a unique twist to the Engineer playstyle, we recommend Sylvari. Grasping Vines gives you a root to lock enemies in place, and Seed Turret naturally complements a summon-based playstyle.
Guardians are generally tanks and supports, which works well with human racial abilities, which heal you and remove conditions that would make you vulnerable.
Asura Mesmers are arguably the best characters for single player play, harnessing Asura’s built-in early-game crowd control with the unbeatable deception of an end-game Mesmer.
Necromancer: Norn and Human
Necromancers are generally very powerful, and Norns work well with all varieties of necromancers. Call Owl and Call Worm help Summon-based Necromancers maintain a constant flow of minions, while Norns transforming abilities help Reavers dive into the thick of battle. For condition-based necromancers, you can try playing a human instead.
Ranger: Charr and Norn
Hidden Pistol and Shrapnel Mine add to a Ranger’s DPS, with the added benefit of Hidden Pistol giving you a dash back to evade threats. The Norns also excel as rangers as they have additional animal summons.
The best RevENTS are the tiny Asura, which have additions built into the condition-oriented playstyle of successful RevENTS.
Similar to Rangers, Charr Thiefs take advantage of the ability to place mines and retreat. Dashes can get you out of a sticky situation, while Mines allow you to lure unsuspecting enemies into a setup for your full damage combo.
For warriors in the thick of battle, make perfect use of Norn’s ability to morph. Warrior Profession stats allow you to stay transformed for long periods of time, fulfilling a Shifter fantasy.
