Former valve developer presents first half-life prototypes
A former Valve employee shows off some prototypes behind the scenes of the first Half-Life, and discusses the name of the game.
There have been decades of influential new games and titles since the original Half-life game of 1998, but that hasn’t stopped the Valve title from being the subject of much discussion over the years. With the fan remake Mesa black Effectively improving on the original, it’s a series that stands in the air like a paragon of FPS greatness, alongside which are neat little details that reveal a bit more about this beloved game.
Recently, a former Valve employee spoke about some of the rejected content that was supposed to be in the first Half-life. Giving fans a sneak peek at behind-the-scenes content, designer Brett Johnson shared old prototypes of the influential title. One of those things was a mockup image showing an early dressing room design that players encounter at the start. Johnson recalls that AFN scientists from Withers 64, which he cites as a great influence on him, ran around corners when they felt threatened. He estimated that scientists from Half-life needed a place to go to be chased, hence the locker room.

The image he shares shows the bloody brutality that was cobbled together during the design phase. He goes on to say that after showing the rest of the team the bloody mess that would become the locker room, Valve finally decided to roll back the violence a bit. This perhaps raises the question of just how popular, or popular, the series would have become had it leaned more towards excessive violence, and whether fans would still be talking about the loss. Johnson, who is now at ArenaNet and working on Guild Wars 2, shared such memories on TikTok, and even discussed the idea that the game wasn’t originally called Half-life. According to him, a number of suggestions were made about the office, a few of which were Trip hammer, and The belly of the beast. While they may not seem like inherently bad names, there is an argument to be made that the games might have been viewed differently had the studio chosen one of the other potential titles.
He also spoke about the game’s alien realm known as Xen, which the fan remake completely redesigned after much delay, which he said was created with limited time. While this is arguably not the strongest part of the game, it still speaks to the imagination of Valve’s creators in the late ’90s, especially since this was the studio’s first wave. .
Haf-Life 3 is still not in development at the time of writing.
