Guild Wars 2 art may show upcoming (or canceled) projects
Guild Wars 2 artwork by a former environmental artist may be a sign of things to come or ideas that will never be part of an actual game.
According to some works of art, Guild Wars 2 Developer ArenaNet may or may not be in the development of a game type using Unreal Engine 4. ArenaNet has been developing the MMO since 2012 with multiple expansions for its consistently consistent player base. While nothing outside of Guild Wars 2 has come out of the studio, there have been rumors of upcoming IP news for years. The game also announced its arrival on Steam, raising eyebrows that new content may be on the way.
With their new expansion, End of Dragons, slated for release this year, fans are wondering what the team is going to do next. Rumors of a Guild Wars 2 mobile game and a brand new console game have been around for some time. Yet no concrete or definitive details have been made available so far. With details so sparse on future content and a corporate restructuring that involved delaying or canceling unknown games, one cannot speculate on what will follow.

A report of Guildnews (Going through Massivelyop) can provide insight into what’s going on in the studio. Invisible artwork by a former ArenaNet environmental artist By Megan Glennon portfolio, shared on Twitter by the user ce_chaman sheds some light on what the studio cooked, or at least made, for their next game after Guild Wars 2. While Guildnews.de reports that the featured games are dead, listings from a main level designer and a game director indicate that something is definitely underway on ArenaNet. Glennon has since defined his portfolio as private.
While Guild wars has always been a PC-only series, the success of other MMOs like Final Fantasy XIV and Elder Scrolls Online both did exceptionally well on consoles. One of the games that are supposed to be in development is a fantasy role-playing game for consoles, a first for the development team. Initially, the team was supposed to work on a port to consoles soon after its release, which never happened as no word on the port ceased after 2013. Although the game is still pretty popular, hundreds of thousands of players still logging in to play, one can only wonder how long after End of Dragons the team needs to figure out how to stay relevant.
Conversely, ArenaNet may not need to be in a hurry to try and release a new MMO or whatever it’s been working on. Many MMOs have grown and shrunk since GW2 came into existence, and many people are willing to continue playing a refined and established multiplayer game rather than wasting time on the dozens of other mediocre MMOs in the wild. Its biggest competition, Blizzard, is always updating and producing content for World of warcraft after almost 17 years, then who can say that Guild Wars 2 is ending soon. Either way, the artwork on display could be a good sign of things to come or a long-dead project. Time will tell us.
Guild Wars 2 is now available on PC.
