New World Sneak Peek: Amazon’s Ambitious MMORPG Shows Great Potential With Brilliant Ideas
Tech and retail giant Amazon has followed the bizarre trend of several tech companies and is trying to break into the video game industry.
However, many of their gaming plans have been canceled more recently, being Breakaway and Crucible as well as their Lord of the Rings online. New World aims to break this trend and be their ticket to the massively multiplayer role-playing game market.
New World is an upcoming open world MMORPG developed by Amazon Games Orange County, Relentless Studios, and Cloud 9 Games with the Alpha running for the past 10 months.
Located during the colonial period around the 1700s, you are drawn by riches and mystical objects to set sail for a strange legendary island called Aeternum.
However, during your journey your ship is wiped out, you then run aground on a strange island, but don’t be fooled by the “island”, the New World map is vast, with settlements, deep forests and dungeons.
After a great cutscene, you are greeted by a simple yet sufficient character creation screen offering a selection of hairstyles, eye colors, facial hair tattoos and skin tones as well as fixed face types.
After a few brief tutorial missions, you begin to explore and will need your wits to collect supplies, form alliances with local factions, and uncover the incredible secrets of Aeternum.
You soon discover that the island is crawling with monsters and other inhabitants like the Corrupted, and you discover that something is wrong with your captain.
The island appears to possess magical properties and has made you and others immortal, which seems to remove much of the threat from the game, but you will soon discover that there are fates worse than death.
The island is full of dangers as well as opportunities and is locked in a constant struggle with its 3 factions, your actions can alter the balance of power.
As you pass through Aeternum you discover new locations and abandoned settlements, but you have to be careful as I stumbled into dangerous areas while searching for materials to be torn apart by higher level monsters.
As an MMORPG, you play alongside other players simultaneously and can band together or fight against each other for resources and territory.
Unlike many RPGs, New World doesn’t have a class system where you choose classes like fighter, mage, or thief. Instead, you get better with specific weapons by using them.
This weapon mastery tree unlocks new moves like the Whirling Blade attack and passive abilities like increasing damage with this weapon.
Upgrading allows you to put skill points into attributes such as strength, dexterity, intelligence, focus, and build. This allows you to experience and really customize the game to suit how you play, as you can stick to those skills if you don’t like building your characters.
New World features a deep combat system that is more involved than most MMOs with no click to automatically attack, single clicks work as light attacks, left click triggers heavy attack, and right clicks act as blocking. You can also dodge with the left shift.
He feels very engaging with your stance, your timing, your active defense all playing an important role.
You can choose from various weapons which all handle very differently like swords, shields, magic gauntlets, bows and arrows, muskets, axes and many more to add even more variety to combat.
The game emphasizes collecting resources to craft powerful weapons and armor.
Each location contains piles of material to collect such as flint, water from bushes, etc. You can also get them by fishing, mining, completing quests, and looting.
The game remains focused on crafting and remains rewarding even at the end of the game and at higher levels, with some unique items only obtainable through skilled crafting of rare materials.
You can also gain ground in the territories by defending them and completing quests in this area, it will get you better rewards.
New World offers a dynamic world for players to compete in. After competing for influence by racing to see which group can win the most in various PvE events like defending the city from attacks.
Then groups of players can go to war in an epic 50v50 PvP battle for control of that region and once possessed you can set taxes in that area.
Even owning a house is smartly linked to gameplay with a house serving as additional storage and a place to keep trophies that give your character permanent buffs.
Like all RPGs, there is a selection of main story quests as well as smaller side missions throughout your adventure as well as PVP and PvE events to give players the opportunity to gain more experience and of resources.
There are several special events like:
Expeditions are a PvE dungeon-style experiences where you team up to solve puzzles, explore, and fight bosses, it’s a linear experience.
Invasion is a PvE mode where 50 parties rise up against a siege of corrupted, fight waves of them, and defend a colony.
There are also PvP events like Outpost Rush which is a 20v20 battle where you run 1000 points by capturing and defending outposts as well as scoring eliminations.
Most MMORPGs are “free to play”, however, after initial rapid progress your progress will stagnate and you will be forced to “grind” for better weapons, materials, etc., but these games offer experience gains, better weapons and armor and other upgrades for real world money.
Unlike most MMORPGs, New World does not follow the typical “free to play” model like Guild Wars 2 and Elder Scrolls Online.
It also doesn’t follow the subscription model like Final Fantasy XIV and World of Warcraft. In New World, you pay the initial cost of the game for $ 39.99 with a few cosmetic microtransactions available.
There are clearly the beginnings of an exciting and gripping game here. It adapts to many playstyles and isn’t just for PvP with a plethora of PvE events and quests to keep you busy.
With a fascinating world, engaging fights, and a lack of pay to win mechanics, Amazon could be a winner if they continue to listen to their fans and support New World as they find their feet so they don’t endure the same fate as Creuset.
The New World game shows a lot of potential and has great ideas and is fun to play, if the game continues to evolve it could turn into something really special.
The Closed Beta begins July 20 with the launch date slated for August.
