Warning: spoilers for “Battle Scars” below!
The episode begins with the team being pursued by the Rhokai for stealing a lizard from them. Tech notices that the Rokhai stole it first. Echo is working on getting the hyper-drive to work again. The lizard escapes from its cage and jumps on Wrecker, who tries to remove it from him. Omega tries to calm him down because he scares the animal. The hyper-drive is finally repaired. Omega grabs the lizard and the squad escapes.

The clones return to Cid’s bar to bring him the lizard. Hunter inquires why the customer wanted him, and Cid replies that she doesn’t care as long as she gets paid. Omega and Wrecker ask permission to leave now that the mission is complete. They have a tradition to follow. Wrecker states it’s because it makes the girl happy, but he’s just as excited as Omega. Hunter is not fooled by him and tells them not to delay. Someone in the bar is watching the whole scene with interest.
In Cid’s office, the Trandoshans give their payment to Hunter, Echo, and Tech. Hunter feels that’s not enough, and Echo asks how it’s a mutually beneficial arrangement if she gets more money. Cid retorts that they are still breathing. She also says they owe her a lot for utilities. Hunter is surprised and Cid gives him a datapad with the list. While most of the list is fuel, rations, etc., Hunter is stunned by the twenty cartons of Mantell Mix. Cut to Wrecker and Omega taking advantage of Mantell Mix and Wrecker putting it on Cid’s tab. The Trandoshan is fed up and wants them to make amends for the droid job they haven’t completed.
Back at the bar, two customers look for trouble by accosting the stranger. The Ithorian and the Weequay want him to move. They run fast when the man is defending himself. Cid, hearing blasters, burst into the bar followed by the clones. She wants to know who the man is. He takes off his cape and we realize it’s Rex. Hunter immediately recognizes this as Cid is not happy to have another clone around. Echo wants to know where Rex was, and he replies that it’s a long story.
The Clones catch up, and Rex tells them he’s stayed low – so low Tech announces the Captain has been listed as killed in action. Echo wants to know how he found them, and Rex reveals that Trace and Rafa Martez told him where to find them. He wants to know more about the kid they’re traveling with when Omega and Wrecker arrive. Wrecker is really happy to see Rex and hugs him, which surprises Omega as she thought Wrecker and the others didn’t like regular clones. Hunter introduces the clone and the girl.

Wrecker’s head still hurts and he asks Tech for a medical patch, but they don’t have any more. Rex is immediately suspicious – especially when he realizes that they still have their inhibitor chips on them saying that they are a threat to everyone, including Omega. Rex searches for his gun while Hunter tries to calm him down. The captain is worried because he knows what fleas are for and he doesn’t want to bury other brothers. Hunter asks for suggestions on how to remove them. Rex says he will reconnect with them when he finds a solution.
A little later, the team is on their way to a meeting with Rex in Bracca. Wrecker gets more and more nervous and doesn’t want to be cut to remove the chip. Technical remarks, they will all have to do it. Omega is the only one without a chip. Hunter and Tech discuss the progress of the chip analysis. Tech starts explaining how it works and Omega translates it saying it’s almost done.
The squad arrives on the planet, which is a graveyard of spaceships. They find Rex wearing his clone armor. Rex shows them a Jedi cruiser similar to the one where Rex’s chip was removed. Wrecker wants to know why they haven’t landed closer and learns that the planet is controlled by the Scrapper Guild; clones need to keep a low profile. En route to the cruiser, Rex remembers how Fives tried to warn him about the chip, but didn’t understand at the time. Echo still struggles to believe it and reveals to Rex that Omega told them about it. They finally reach the cruiser.
Inside the ship, Rex feels uncomfortable because the last time he was on a cruiser like this it didn’t end well. Echo wants to know how he got his chip out. Rex responds that he had some help, being careful not to name Ahsoka, the former Jedi. The clones come across a hole in the ship that they must pass through to get to the medical bay. They run through the hole using a cable, but when it’s his turn, Wrecker is reluctant, saying his head doesn’t hurt anymore. Omega urges the clone to cross and he begins to walk towards her until the cable breaks. He falls and hits his head again before being attacked from a diagonal (we saw it for the first time on the Death Star in New hope), but his team are able to pick him up and save him.
The clones finally reach the medical bay. Echo begins to calibrate the surgical module and the power is restored. Removing the chip is now urgent, as we can see, Wrecker is in more and more pain. Tech starts scanning it. Omega is worried and goes to speak to Hunter, expressing concern about the procedure and that it might not work on them the way it did on Rex. The young girl is afraid of being alone again. Hunter reassures her by saying that she is stuck with them.
Meanwhile, Tech finds the chip in Wrecker’s head. The clone is agitated more and more. Omega realizes that something is wrong; the scanner seems to have made the clone’s symptoms worse, and Rex thinks they need to hurry. Rex and Hunter discuss the few clones that can resist Order 66. Hunter remembers what happened on Kaller when the clones attacked Jedi Depa Billaba and at least they were able to help the Padawan, Caleb Dume, to escape. Hearing this triggers a reaction from Wrecker who attacks Tech saying he’s “in direct violation of Order 66”. The clone takes his helmet and weapon and begins to fight his brothers and Omega. Hunter, Rex, and Echo pull him out of the infirmary while Tech protects Omega.
The clones fail to hold Wrecker back. He captures Hunter and begins to suffocate him, saying that all Order 66-violating clones must be eliminated until Omega shoots him to save Hunter. Wrecker then goes after her. She takes refuge in a room and hides. Wrecker finally finds her. She tries to reach out to him, saying it’s not really him and “Wrecker, I’m your friend.” He replies “Good soldiers follow orders,” while preparing to shoot him. Rex stuns him at the last minute and saves Omega.
Wrecker is back in medical bay. Echo is concerned that the operation may take too long and Rex cannot confirm if this is normal or not. The procedure is finally over, and Omega tries to wake her friend without success. He is alive, but not stable. All they can do is wait and see if Wrecker regains consciousness. Omega refuses to leave him until he wakes up.
Later, Omega is sleeping next to Wrecker when she feels a hand on her head. Wrecker is awake and is back to normal. The rest of the team has the chip removed. While packing, Wrecker looks preoccupied and goes to talk to Omega. He feels guilty and apologizes for attacking her, saying he tried very hard to fight him. She forgives him and gives him Mantell Mix to celebrate another successful mission since it is tradition.
Outside the ship, Rex talks to someone about a date. Hunter is not surprised and tells him that he knew Rex was not done fighting. Rex does not stop fighting for the Republic and tries to convince Hunter to come and help him. Hunter doesn’t want to because the team’s priorities have changed. They need to protect Omega, and Hunter wants to do what’s best for his team, even though he doesn’t know what it is yet. Rex tells him to keep him informed when he finds out.
Hunter urges Rex to reach out if he needs help. The clones go their separate ways without realizing that they have been observed by members of the Scrapper Guild, who inform the Empire.
Fans have long wondered what happened to Rex between the end of Clone wars, being reunited with Ahsoka, and fighting for rebellion in the rebels. It is a real treat to watch it in The bad lot meet the team and introduce yourself to Omega. Hopefully, this won’t be the last time we see him in the series.
So far, the show has focused more on the relationship between Omega and Hunter. In this episode, we saw how close the girl and Wrecker have become and how afraid Omega is of losing her new friends. Omega is now part of the team and it will be interesting to see how things play out when the team crosses paths with Crosshairs again.
Who was Rex talking to at the end of the episode? Will Crosshairs be back in the next episode? And if so, will the squad remove its chip? A new episode of The bad lot releases on Disney + on June 18. Stay tuned for more recaps by Nerds and Beyond.
