In a first game session of the last chapter, I got to taste some of what these new Dragon Response bosses had up their sleeves. For example, the mission in the Fields of Ruin allows you to take on waves of fiery destroyer units, solo or in a group, and with an allied faction at your side (mine was the vanguard of ebony, but you can recruit the newly added dwarves of Deldrimor). Of course, missions can scale appropriately depending on the size of your party, and there are a lot of Charrzookas hitting to give you some extra firepower, but the encounter at its end is quite difficult.
The boss of the Fields of Ruin is the Destroyer of the Third Fortress – a towering figure made of flame and metal, with large gnarled blades for his hands. He’s not that mobile, so planting banners of strength and discipline in the ground nearby works well throughout the battle. The boss relies on plenty of area-of-effect attacks, such as wedge-shaped fire blasts and an overwhelming circle of angry red fate that closes around the group. The only safe place is a green circle in the middle that you must jump into before you get to.
It’s a fierce battle, even without the additional challenge modifiers, but – as Kimmes explains – the team took the opportunity to readjust some aspects of the missions in the new chapter, such as scaling. enemy, health, and durability, so players can look forward to it. some useful tweaks. “With Response Missions being split into an open version and a private version, one area of friction was the engine settings that made them work differently between versions – instance ownership, behavior at map boundaries, etc.” , he told me.
“We’ve seen a lot of feedback on the issues on this and have been working to update our private instance management to improve the player experience. One area we tweaked in particular was the health scaling from challenge mode buffs. Bosses got a big boost to their base health in challenge mode, but that didn’t scale to party size – so a health boost that was fine for a full team was a much bigger wall for them. solo or duo players.
“In Chapter 1, some of the bosses also had different baseline health stats, which made this problem worse,” says Kimmes. “We made sure that all of the bosses had comparable health and scale, and we made sure their bonuses adjusted correctly to the size of the players’ squad.”

Speaking of all those bosses, the new chapter includes Dragon Response missions that also lead the fight to three other locations: Thunderhead Peaks, Lake Doric, and Snowden Drifts.
